The Alberta Division of the Canadian Union of Public Employees encourages our members and other Albertans to recognize National Aboriginal Day.
Since 1996, National Aboriginal Day has been a time to recognize the important contributions that First Nations people have made to our country.
June 21 is a day to recognize the enormous challenges faced by our First Nations. Poverty, high rates of suicide, drug and alcohol abuse, and limited access to education have made life in Canada much harder for aboriginal Canadians. Native communities also have problems with access to clean drinking water, proper health care, and access to basic public services.
CUPE Alberta would like to re-affirm our commitment to resolving the problems faced by First Nations, and offer our moral and practical support in any way we can to bridge the divide between aboriginal and non-aboriginal Canadians.
