EDMONTON—CUPE were saddened to learn of the deaths of two long time labour activists and friends to our union.
Edmonton District Laboour Council President Tom Olenuk, and CUPE 40 member Aloma Mitchell both passed away last week.
Olenuk was a member of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) since 1978. He spent 11 years as on the executive of the Edmonton Local. He was elected President of the EDLC in 2003 and served in that role until his death.
There will be a celebration of Tom’s life from 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 28, in the cafeteria of NorQuest College, 10215 - 108 Street N.W. in Edmonton.
Aloma Mitchell was the 2008 recipient of the AFL May Day Award and was a long standing member of the AFL Human Rights and International Solidarity Committee & the AFL Health and Safety Committee. She was a delegate & executive member of the Calgary & District Labour Council, and founder of Fibromyalgia First Step and Beyond Society of Canada. According to her wishes there will be no memorial service.
