ALBERTA - CUPE Alberta is marking August 20 as Farm Workers Day, as Alberta continues to lag behind other provinces in protecting farm workers' rights and safety.
Unlike British Columbia and other provinces, Alberta farm workers do not have the right to join unions. CUPE Alberta President D’Arcy Lanovaz says that’s not acceptable.
“More and more of our agricultural sector is being taken over by huge multinational corporations,” said Lanovaz. “They are often big employers, who don’t always treat their employees well.”
Lanovaz said all employees deserve the option to have a union and called on the Alberta government to change the law.
“There is no good reason for farm workers in Alberta to be denied a right that workers in BC enjoy – where is the Alberta advantage in that?”
