Five years, and over ten thousand socks later, CUPE 290's annual "Sock it to 'em" campaign is showing no signs of slowing down. Once again this holiday season, employees of Lethbridge and area schools are sponsoring a sock drive for local charities.
The initiative, sponsored by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 290, draws activity from school staff, parents, students and members of the public.
"I've retired since we started doing this annual drive," said former Local 290 Treasurer Gail Petrie, "but this campaign is my baby, so I keep working on it. If we have enough, it's our responsibility to do what we can for those who don't. That's how you build strong communities."
The local is building a 'sock mountain' and will present it to representatives of local charities on Tuesday, December 18th. The charities that will be receiving socks are: The Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, Harbour House, Woods Homes and the Homeless Shelter. Media are welcome to attend.
