ALBERTA - CUPE Alberta members are urged to communicate with prospective candidates for municipal elections and voice their opposition to TILMA - a new trade deal that's a bad deal for our communities.
The BC-Alberta Trade, Investment, and Labour Mobility Act (TILMA) allows corporations to sue governments for any environmental, labour, or other regulation that might cost business money.
Who decides what kinds of laws might fall under TILMA? Not governments. A secretive tribunal makes those decisions.
Over the next 18 months, the Alberta government will consult with municipalities over what is included in TILMA. Those consultations will determine whether municipalities have the right to local choice on policies such as housing, downtown revitalization, and keeping city and town services public.
