CUPE Alberta Scholarship

One scholarship of $1000.00 will be awarded each year to a CUPE Alberta member or a member of their immediate family who is pursuing post secondary labour oriented studies. (Immediate family shall include and be limited to spouse and children). Any individuals who have previously received a CUPE Alberta scholarship are also exempt.

CUPE Alberta Scholarship is open to applicants entering undergraduate or graduate studies in one of the following areas of study:

  • Labour Studies
  • Industrial Relations
  • Social Science related to Labour or Labour movement
  • Labour Law

The name of the member or of their immediate family member who are eligible must be submitted through their local union. A letter of endorsement from their local must accompany the application form. Their local union must be affiliated and in good standing with CUPE Alberta Division.

Recipients must be accepted as full-time students to attend an accredited post-secondary institution in the school year commencing in the fall of each year.
Successful applicants will be required to provide proof of registration.

Applications must be submitted no later than May 1st of each year.

The Scholarship will be awarded by November 30th of each year.

Decisions of the CUPE Alberta Scholarship committee will be final. (CUPE Alberta Scholarship committee is comprised of the CUPE Alberta Executive.)

An applicant must submit a 2500 word essay on one of the following topics:

1) Why Unions?
2) What Union membership means to me.
3) The importance of youth involvement in today’s unions.
4) CUPE’s contribution to Alberta society.

CUPE 1445 Scholarships

CUPE Endowment Scholarship
Award # 0065
Value: $300
Donor: CUPE 1445

Eligibility: Awarded to a student continuing in the second year of full-time studies at Red Deer College who is a present or past Red Deer College CUPE member or immediate family member (First preference given to a member who has at least two consecutive years of service with CUPE Local 1445).  Second preference is a student continuing full time studies at Red Deer College in a collaborative degree.

Criteria: Academic performance, financial need, and community involvement.  If no recipient is chosen with first preference or second preference, then student continuing studies at any post-secondary institution may be eligible.

Submit: Continuing Student Award Application by May 31.

CUPE/Florence Stephan performing arts scholarship
Award # 0066
Value: $200 (approximate)
Donor: CUPE Local 1445

Eligibility: Having complete the first year at Red Deer College in a Performing Arts Program and continuing in full time studies in the second year at Red Deer College.

Criteria: Involvement in performance and contribution to the college and community.

Scholarship will rotate between programs.  Two year (2004,2005)  it will be given to a Theatre Program - Technical, Performance, Costume Cutting or Motion Picture Arts Applied Degree.  One year (2006) it will be given to the Music Diploma Program.

Nominated by the Performing Arts Chairperson in consultation with the faculty.

Local 30 Edmonton civic workers bursary

A Bursary program for CUPE Local 30 members and family (as well as other employees of the City of Edmonton) exists through the Civic Employees Charitable Assistance Fund.

The criteria of the bursary is as follows:

1. Must be contributing to the Charitable Assistance Fund for 12 consecutive months (this is a charitable deduction that is taken off each members pay cheque)
2. The student must be a dependant of a member, retired member or deceased member in service.
3. The bursary is for the first year (two terms in total) and is on average about $900.00 per semester - depending on the status of the fund.

Local 1169

VALUE: Two @ $1000 annually
DONOR: CUPE 1169

Eligibility: Awarded to a member of CUPE 1169 in good standing who has attended at least 50% of local’s meetings in the previous year. Applicant must have been a card carrying member of CUPE 1169 for a minimum of one calendar year. Applicant will be required to submit an essay on what Unions mean to them. Scholarships are available for education or training from a recognized educational institution in Alberta. (Public postsecondary institutions given authority to grant degrees, diplomas, and certificates through specific legislation are “recognized” institutions. A small number of private postsecondary institutions also have been given degree-granting authority, and these too are “recognized.”) Proof of registration and proof of completion of course will be required.

Criteria: Application to the CUPE 1169 scholarship fund can be made no more than once every three years.

How to Apply: Fill out the scholarship application form and submit to President, CUPE 1169. Scholarship recipients will be notified by September 1st of each year. Once confirmation of enrollment has been submitted, the local will remit monies directly to the successful applicant.
